Chapter 02
Why we think so
0 points against it and 3 in its favour, checked against the scan evidence.
The reasoning behind this verdict
When it was opened in the sandbox, only Adobe Acrobat and its own helper processes ran. No network contacts or injection targets were recorded for it.
The sandbox runs show Acrobat opening the file and Adobe's crash-reporting tools writing their usual logs. Two technique labels for injection and credential access appear in the sandbox summary, but no matching activity was recorded behind them. No network contacts by the document were observed. Our own static inspection of the PDF was not available, and the file has been submitted by a single source, which limits the history behind this assessment.
What We Detected
None of the 61 antivirus engines that checked it flagged this PDF document, first seen on Aug 16, 2026. All major antivirus engines that analysed it returned a clean result.
Threat Behavior
In the sandbox runs the document opened in Adobe Acrobat. Only Acrobat and Adobe's own crash-reporting helpers ran, writing ordinary application settings and logs. No injected processes or network contacts by the document were recorded. Two technique labels in the sandbox summary had no supporting activity behind them.
What To Do Now
The document can be opened normally. Keep your PDF reader updated, and confirm that the sender is legitimate before following any links inside the document.
Where this verdict could be wrong2 caveats
- Our own static analysis of the PDF's contents was not available, so embedded links or actions were not inspected directly.
- The file was submitted by only one source, so it has little reputation history.
These are the assessment's weak points. If you believe one applies to your file, report the verdict and we'll re-review it.
- None of the 61 antivirus engines that checked it flagged the document.
- Opening it only launched Adobe Acrobat and Adobe's normal helper processes.
- No injected processes or network contacts by the document were observed.

Signatures and behavior heuristics
Low-severity pattern matches — worth noting but not on their own cause for alarm.
VirusTotal's sandbox summary maps this run to MITRE T1055 (Process Injection), but no injected process of the sample's own was recorded (the analysis VM's own WMI adapter, crash handlers and Chrome updater are not counted). VirusTotal maps T1055 on about half of all files no engine flags, so the mapping alone is not evidence of injection.
EvidenceT1055 (sandbox MITRE mapping)VirusTotal's sandbox summary maps this run to MITRE T1003 (OS Credential Dumping), but no process targeting LSASS or another credential store was recorded. VirusTotal maps T1003 on clean files more often than on detected ones, so the mapping alone is not evidence of credential theft.

How widely this file has been seen
Rarely uploaded, and first seen more than two weeks ago. Often niche legitimate software or internal tooling; not a strong malware signal on its own.
