Read the whole reasonShow less
Why Suspicious? 6 antivirus engines flag it and it is listed in MalwareBazaar, a public database that accepts automated uploads.
Moderate evidence · More than one sign points to a problem, but nothing confirms it is harmful.
Treat this as unwanted bundling software: uninstall it unless you installed it on purpose, and remove any extra programs it added.
What to do now4 steps
Some signs point to a problem, but nothing confirms it is harmful. Treat it with caution.
What to do
Don't run it unless you're sure where it came from.
Check where you got it: an unexpected attachment, a link someone sent you or a re-upload is a red flag.
If you can't confirm where it came from, delete it. If you need the program, download it again from the publisher's own website.
If you already ran it
Stop using it, run a full scan with your antivirus and watch for unexpected behavior or security alerts.
Not sure what to do?
Ask the MalwareTips community before you run it. If you already ran it, follow the cleanup guide.

Chapter 02
Why we think so
5 points against it and 3 in its favour, checked against the scan evidence.
The reasoning behind this verdict
This downloader is detected by 6 of the 70 antivirus engines that checked it, including ESET and Malwarebytes, as a Tencent potentially unwanted application, and a public sample database lists it as adware. In sandbox runs it launched a second installer, which is typical bundling behaviour. No engine names a real malware family, so it looks like unwanted software rather than a trojan.
ESET-NOD32, Malwarebytes and Gridinsoft label the file a Tencent potentially unwanted program, while the other flagging engines give generic labels. A public sample-sharing database lists the hash as adware, and two malware-specific community YARA rules matched low-level code patterns. The file is unsigned, yet it is widely distributed, with thousands of submitters since 2023. Activity in the test run showed it writing Tencent game-assistant files and starting another installer, with no recorded injection into other processes. None of the three contacted hosts we checked is known malicious, and no dropped file was flagged. Together this points to bundling adware-like software rather than outright malware.
What We Detected
6 of the 70 antivirus engines that checked it flagged this unsigned executable. ESET-NOD32 calls it a Tencent potentially unwanted application, Malwarebytes and Gridinsoft report a Tencent unwanted program, and DeepInstinct, Sangfor and Xcitium give generic labels. A public sample database lists it as adware, and two community YARA rules for low-level code patterns matched.
Threat Behavior
The sandbox runs show the downloader writing Tencent game-assistant files and launching an additional installer, which is consistent with software bundling. No injection into other processes was recorded, none of the three contacted hosts we checked is known malicious, and no dropped file was flagged.
What To Do Now
If you did not deliberately install a Tencent game downloader, remove it and any extra programs it installed. If you want this software, download it only from Tencent's official site and decline bundled offers. Keep your antivirus enabled.
Where this verdict could be wrong2 caveats
- The file is widely seen, with thousands of submitters over more than three years, and 64 engines including Kaspersky, BitDefender and Avast did not flag it, which fits a legitimate if unwanted Tencent game downloader rather than malware.
- The two specific YARA matches describe low-level code patterns that also appear in some legitimate native software.
These are the assessment's weak points. If you believe one applies to your file, report the verdict and we'll re-review it.
- Widely distributed, with thousands of submitters over more than three years
- 64 engines, including Kaspersky, BitDefender and Avast, did not flag it
- No injection into other processes and no flagged dropped files were recorded
- A leading engine and two other engines flag it as potentially unwanted Tencent software
- Listed as adware in a public malware-sample database
- Launched an additional bundled installer during analysis
- Two malware-specific YARA rules matched low-level code patterns
- The executable carries no code signature

What the test run showed
What the file did on a test computer
Confirmed in the test run
Moderate concern: Contains packed or scrambled code that is harder to inspect (common in installers too).
Moderate concern: Ran commands or a script on the test computer.
Moderate concern: Used an unusual way to talk to a server.
Moderate concern: Unpacked hidden content while it ran.
Moderate concern: Checked whether it was running on a test computer.
Moderate concern: Hid files or windows on the test computer.
Moderate concern: Contacted a server on an unusual network port.
Sandbox labels we could not confirm (common in safe files too)
Not confirmed: A sandbox rule tagged this run as password-store access, but nothing touched the Windows password store.
Not confirmed: A sandbox rule tagged this run as code injection, but no injected program was recorded.
Not confirmed: A sandbox rule tagged this run as recording keystrokes; no keylogging was confirmed.
Not confirmed: A sandbox rule tagged this run as setting up auto-start; no auto-start entry was recorded.
This file was run on a test computer (a sandbox), not on yours. Labels we could not confirm are listed so you can see them, but they are not treated as evidence against the file.

VirusTotal's sandbox summary maps this run to MITRE T1055 (Process Injection), but no injected process of the sample's own was recorded (the analysis VM's own WMI adapter, crash handlers and Chrome updater are not counted). VirusTotal maps T1055 on about half of all files no engine flags, so the mapping alone is not evidence of injection.
EvidenceT1055 (sandbox MITRE mapping)VirusTotal's sandbox summary maps this run to MITRE T1003 (OS Credential Dumping), but no process targeting LSASS or another credential store was recorded. VirusTotal maps T1003 on clean files more often than on detected ones, so the mapping alone is not evidence of credential theft.

Section entropy & packers
No high-entropy executable section or known packer signature was detected. Data and resource sections can still have high entropy without indicating packed code.
How widely this file has been seen
Widely seen in the wild for a long time. High prior this is legitimate; isolated detections on common-old files are usually false positives.
