Chapter 02
Why we think so
3 points against it and 5 in its favour, checked against the scan evidence.
The reasoning behind this verdict
The combined sandbox verdict was clean with no process injection, no persistence and no remote control traffic, and the network hosts we checked showed nothing harmful. Two community detection patterns matched, but they look like generic or demo signatures and nothing else backs them.
Across the antivirus engines no engine reported this file as malicious or suspicious, and all 18 major antivirus engines returned a clean result. Observation from the test run is the strongest part of the case here: the combined sandbox verdict was clean, with no injected processes, no persistence entries, no program markers and no unusual high-risk techniques — the techniques recorded are the ones legitimate installers and utilities routinely produce. The network side is equally quiet: eleven hosts were checked against our reputation data and none were known-malicious or known-suspicious, and every domain and address seen during analysis is ordinary analysis-machine background traffic rather than something the sample reached out to. The only adverse item is two community detection patterns matching, one of them a demo rule and the other aimed at macro documents, which this portable executable does not contain. With 133 distinct submitters since February 2011, no packing and low code entropy, the remaining signals point to an ordinary legacy utility.
What We Detected
This is a small Windows executable (about 105 KB) first seen on Feb 7, 2011. None of the 72 antivirus engines that checked it flagged it, and the 18 highest-trust engines all returned a clean verdict. The file is not compressed or packed, its code section sits at normal entropy, and nothing in its structure suggests obfuscation.
Two community detection patterns matched during reputation lookups. One is explicitly a demonstration rule and the other targets macro documents, which this executable is not. No engine on either of our top two trust tiers picks the file up, and the analysis runs found nothing to corroborate them, so they read as coincidental pattern matches rather than evidence of a real threat.
Threat Behavior
Five sandbox runs were completed and the combined result was clean. The runs recorded no injection into other processes, no persistence through the registry or startup locations, no program markers and no credential or defence-tampering artefacts. The behaviour that was logged — reading system information, ordinary network calls and library loading — is the same set of techniques seen in everyday software.
Network activity was limited to analysis-machine background traffic: the domains and addresses observed during the runs are the analysis environment's own contacts, not the program's. We checked eleven hosts against our reputation data and none were known to be harmful.
What To Do Now
No action is needed for this file. Because it is an old, unsigned program, keep security software switched on when you run it and download it only from the place you originally obtained it, so you know exactly which copy you are using.
Where this verdict could be wrong2 caveats
- Two community malware-detection patterns still matched these bytes; if they describe real code rather than a coincidental pattern, that would be missed by the engines here.
- The program carries no digital signature and dates from 2011, so there is no publisher identity to confirm who built it or that the file is unmodified since release.
These are the assessment's weak points. If you believe one applies to your file, report the verdict and we'll re-review it.
- None of the 72 antivirus engines that checked it flagged the file, and all 18 major antivirus engines returned a clean result.
- The combined sandbox verdict was clean with no process injection, persistence or remote control traffic.
- Eleven checked network hosts showed no malicious or suspicious reputation entries.
- 133 distinct submitters have sent this file since February 2011, which fits widely shared, long-lived software.
- The executable is neither packed nor obfuscated, with normal code entropy and no high-entropy sections.
- The file has no digital signature, so its publisher and integrity cannot be confirmed.
- It is a 2011-era binary, which means it was built without modern compiler hardening.
- Two community malware-detection patterns matched these bytes, although nothing else in the analysis backs them.

Signatures and behavior heuristics
A community signature or high-severity behavioral heuristic matched. Signatures identify known patterns; heuristics are strong leads but are not proof on their own.

Section entropy & packers
No high-entropy executable section or known packer signature was detected. Data and resource sections can still have high entropy without indicating packed code.
How widely this file has been seen
Widely seen in the wild for a long time. High prior this is legitimate; isolated detections on common-old files are usually false positives.
