Verdict

newtab.art is a fake search engine and browser hijacker that forces visitors into an unwanted redirect loop.

newtab.art presents itself as a search page but is not a real search engine. Researchers describe it as a fake search engine that cannot provide its own results and instead redirects to a legitimate search engine, promoted through redirects generated by software in the browser hijacker category. A user in Google's Chrome support forum reports being redirected to newtab.art with a tracking-style link and being unable to escape it, with removal instructions failing. The domain is only 324 days old, no operator is disclosed, and no contact email was found on the captured page. Nine engines flag it as malicious and two as suspicious, with eight independent antivirus families reporting adverse results. The site is not a shop, casino, or download portal; its harm is unwanted browser control and forced redirection, which is why it scores in the Dangerous band.

Do not use newtab.art as a search page or homepage. If your browser keeps sending you there, treat it as a browser hijacker: remove unfamiliar extensions and programs, reset your browser settings, and run a reputable malware scan. Do not enter personal information on the page, and do not trust any removal tool it may point you toward.

Lost money or shared details on newtab.art? Do this now

Act quickly: the first hours matter most for a chargeback.

  1. Call your bank or card issuer now

Ask them to dispute the charge or open a chargeback; the sooner you act, the better your odds. Card payments can often be reversed. Bank transfers and gift cards are harder, but report them to your bank too. Crypto payments usually cannot be reversed: report the wallet address and transaction ID to the exchange you sent from.

  2. Change any password you entered

If you entered a password on newtab.art, change it there and anywhere you reused it, and turn on two-factor authentication. Keep screenshots, order confirmations and messages as evidence.

  3. Report the site

Reports help get scam sites taken down faster and warn other people.

  4. Report the domain to its registrar

NameCheap, Inc. registered this domain. ICANN's lookup shows the registrar's abuse contact.

  5. Ignore anyone offering to recover your money

"Recovery" services or agents who contact you, or ask for a fee up front, are almost always a second scam aimed at victims. Your bank's dispute process and the official reporting services never charge a fee in advance.

Full answers about refunds and reporting are in the Safety FAQ below.

01 · Investigation Brief

Investigation Brief

newtab.art presents itself as a search page but is not a real search engine.

How the hijack works

The page is built to look like a search destination, but researchers found it cannot deliver its own search results and instead forwards visitors to a legitimate search engine. That forwarding is the core of the deception: the visitor believes they are using a search tool while their browser is being steered by something else.

The redirect is not a one-time event. A user on Google's Chrome support forum describes being sent to newtab.art through a link containing a GUID parameter and states they cannot escape it, and that published removal instructions never work. That is the signature of a browser hijacker: the redirect persists and resists normal cleanup.

Technical detections and hidden operator

Independent scanning is strongly adverse. Nine engines classify the domain as malicious and two as suspicious across 93 engines, and eight separate antivirus families returned an adverse result. These are not generic reputation flags; they align with the researcher classification of the site as a browser hijacker.

The operator is not disclosed on the site, and no direct contact email was found on the captured page. The registrable domain is only 324 days old. A young, anonymous domain that exists to redirect browsers offers no accountability if something goes wrong.

Two checks were clean: the browser threat feed returned no threat warning, and the saved TLS check found a valid encrypted connection. Those results mean no detection at the time of the check; they do not make a hijacker safe, because the harm here is unwanted browser behavior rather than a blocked malware download.

Why the score is 18

8 independent antivirus families reported an adverse result. Coverage remains separate so missing sources cannot be mistaken for clean results.

What this means for you

What a visitor actually experiences

A visitor lands on newtab.art, often without choosing to, through a redirect that carries a GUID parameter. The page then forwards them onward to a legitimate search engine, so the search they see is not the site's own.

How the observed mechanism works

The evidence-backed path

Each stage below is preserved from the grounded analysis and linked to saved evidence.

  1. The redirect persists. The same user reports being unable to escape it and finding that removal instructions never work, which means the unwanted behavior continues across browsing sessions until the underlying hijacker is properly removed.

06 · Your Next Move

Your next move

Malvertising exposure

Observed behavior includes unrelated pop-ups or redirects, notification prompts, or deceptive download controls. These are the primary risk unless the evidence separately proves a more serious mechanism.

  1. Do not interact with newtab.art

Do not enter credentials, deposit money, download files, or install browser extensions from this site.

  2. Close unexpected tabs and deny notification requests

Do not follow an unrelated landing page, click "Allow notifications", or install a player, codec, browser extension, or update offered through an advert.

  3. If you clicked "Allow", turn the notifications back off

Open your browser's Site Settings → Notifications, find the site, and set it to Block (or remove it). That stops the spam pop-ups it now pushes to your desktop.

  4. Remove anything installed through an advert

Uninstall any browser extension, player, codec, or app added because of a pop-up, then run a reputable adware and malware scan. Do not call support numbers shown by unrelated landing pages.

07 · Safety FAQ

Safety FAQ

Common questions, answered directly from the scan data above — so the answers reflect the saved verdict and evidence in this report.

Is newtab.art a scam or a legit site?
newtab.art exposes visitors to aggressive advertising or malvertising behavior such as unrelated pop-ups, forced redirects, notification prompts, or deceptive download controls. 11 of 93 security engines flag it (9 as outright malicious). The external destination is a separate actor unless same-site evidence proves otherwise. Close unexpected tabs, deny notification requests, and do not install software offered through an advert.
Is newtab.art safe to use?
No — newtab.art has a Safety Score of 18/100 (Dangerous) because decisive threat evidence was saved with this scan. Leave the site and do not log in, pay, download anything, or connect a wallet.
What is the risk from the ads and redirects on newtab.art?
newtab.art can expose visitors to unrelated pop-ups, forced redirects, notification prompts, or deceptive download controls. Simply seeing an advert is not the same as an infection, but following the landing, allowing notifications, or installing an offered player, codec, extension, or update creates real risk. Close unexpected tabs, block notification permission, and scan anything you downloaded before opening it.
Why does newtab.art open unrelated pages or pop-ups?
The saved browser evidence shows an aggressive advertising or affiliate path. A play, convert, continue, or download control may open a separate destination, and that landing can request notifications or offer unwanted software. This is malvertising exposure; it does not mean every message on the external page was written by newtab.art.
How do I stop the pop-ups or notifications from newtab.art?
If you're getting pop-ups even after closing the page, you probably clicked "Allow" on a notification prompt — the spam now comes from your browser, not the site. Open your browser settings → Site Settings → Notifications, find newtab.art (and anything else you don't recognise), and set it to Block or remove it. Then uninstall any extension, "player", or app you added because of the page, and run a reputable free adware/malware cleaner (e.g. Malwarebytes) to clear leftover PUPs.
Has newtab.art been flagged by antivirus engines?
Yes. 11 of 93 antivirus and blocklist engines in our malware network flagged newtab.art, 9 of them as outright malicious. Even a single detection from a reputable engine is a meaningful warning, and multiple detections rarely happen by accident.
Is newtab.art on any phishing or malware blacklists?
No — newtab.art is not currently on the major browser blocklist feeds that Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge rely on. Note that blocklists can lag behind brand-new scam domains, so "not listed" is reassuring but not a guarantee on its own.
How old is the newtab.art domain?
newtab.art is 10 months old, registered on December 2, 2025 through NameCheap, Inc. A registration history of under two years is neither a strong positive nor a strong negative signal on its own.
Where is newtab.art hosted?
newtab.art resolves to an IP operated by Cloudflare, Inc. in US (Content Delivery Network). Hosting location alone doesn't make a site good or bad — but hosting that doesn't match a brand's claimed country, or that sits on networks known for abuse, is one of the many signals we weigh alongside the verdict above.
How often is the newtab.art report updated?
This report is a record of the scan run on October 23, 2026, and the verdict reflects that point in time. Scam sites change fast — they can go live, get flagged, or vanish within days — so if you believe something about newtab.art has changed, MalwareTips staff can run a fresh scan that re-checks every signal from scratch and republishes an updated verdict.
